A Co-op of House Building for High Need, Low Income Families
One such CDHO is Habitat for Humanities International (HFHI), who has built over 350,000 homes (in over 3,000 communities) since 1976. They build and repair homes for underprivileged families at well below market value. It’s not a give-away program, but it makes people self-sufficient, as they make a down payment and monthly payments they can afford.
Habitat for Humanities is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. This doesn’t mean they only help Christians with housing, they will help anyone who fits the guidelines. They’re trying to eliminate poverty housing, as everyone deserves to live in decent shelter.
How do They do It?
They invite people of all colors, creeds, locations, income and religions to build and repair houses with the people that already, or soon will live in them, providing safe, decent, affordable homes for those who could not otherwise get it. Volunteers and tenants build and repair housing and partnered individuals and businesses donate the materials. It works.
HFHI is an organization that benefits people in all 50 United States, Puerto Rico and dozens of countries around the world. Operational headquarters are in Americus, Georgia, USA and the administrative headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Anyone in the world who’d like to sign up for a Habitat for Housing International home, their website (www.habitat.org) has application instructions on it for you.
